Education and research under the spotlight at OPÓTICA 2026

The final stretch of this year’s OPÓTICA summit will feature a roundtable discussion dedicated to academic and scientific reflection on the future of vision professions. At 4:00 p.m., experts will gather to discuss the topic “Education and research in vision sciences: where do we stand compared to Europe?”.

Moderated by João Firmo, this session will analyze Portugal’s position in the European landscape, both in terms of higher education in vision sciences and in applied research and technological innovation.

The panel will feature presentations by Ana Roque (ISEC Lisbon), Clara Pérez (University of Santiago de Compostela), Madalena Lira (University of Minho), Francisco Brardo (University of Beira Interior), and Luís Vieira (OcularEyeCare). Together, they will discuss academic models, challenges to scientific mobility, and opportunities for international cooperation that can strengthen the education and practice of optometry.

The OPÓTICA summit, promoted by ÓpticaPro magazine, will be held at the Hotel Solverde Spa & Wellness Center in S. Félix da Marinha (Vila Nova de Gaia) on March 21, bringing together professionals, researchers, and institutional representatives from the optical sector and vision sciences.
